This evening at sunset, the Ganga Aarti Ceremony takes place at the Dasaswamedh Ghat. There are about 6 platforms set along the bank of the Ganges, and on each platform, a priest is doing the puja. Incense fills the air, and the sound of the gongs resonates down the river. The ceremony lasts for about 90 minutes. Hundreds of candles, placed upon a basket, float to the sea (these candles are made from banana-leaves & flowers). They are sent into the river in remembrance of departed loved ones, as a gift to Mother Ganga.
